GunderGang: Door County get-away!

Mike and I are lucky to have family close-by who are so willing to help us with the kids. Each fall they've allowed us the opportunity to get-away, just the two of us. Last weekend we spent the weekend away in Green Bay and Door County, WI.

Door County is a place I have heard a lot about over the years and have always wanted to visit. It's known for its beautiful surroundings, unique shops and good eats. And it did not disappoint!

We spent one night in Green Bay on our way there and had a great dinner at a cute little bistro and visited Lambeau Field, "enemy territory" as Mike put it!

And once we got into Door County, we stopped wherever looked fun and interesting on the way! That included a farmer's market/craft fair in Sturgeon Bay, a distillery/winery for taste-testing, and lunch at a local micro-brewery and site-seeing and shopping in Egg Harbor.

We eventually made our way to the town in which we stayed--Fish Creek. We spent most of our time in Fish Creek and it was by-far our favorite Door County town. There are many cute little shops that specialize in anything from confections to clothes to jewelry. And there are lots of cute little restaurants and coffee shops. Nothing in Fish Creek is a 'chain,' most are little ma-and pa-shops. It's so clean and neat and every corner was adorned with beautiful fall decorations.

Mike was a trooper with all the shopping we did. Although I took his photo by the 'Husband Waiting Area' sign, he really never used those seats and we had fun shopping together finding little treasures for ourselves and our family.

We enjoyed a traditional Door County fish boil, where freshly caught Lake Michigan whitefish caught by local fishermen is cooked outside over an open fire. It was a neat (and yummy!) experience and fun to learn about the tradition.

The fall colors were at their peak when we were there. This made the drive there very beautiful as well as the surroundings during our stay. We saw the best views from Peninsula State Park, including from a 75' viewing tower above the trees and right on the lake.

Door County is also known for its many beautiful lighthouses. We visited one--Eagle Bluff Lighthouse, also in Peninsula State Park, used to illuminate Lake Michigan's Green Bay.

We also traveled beyond Fish Creek to Ephraim and Sister Bay. We caught the Vikings game at a little bar in Sister Bay (luckily it was on and completed, with a win!, before the Packers game started!). And in Sister Bay we visited the famous Al Johnson's Swedish Restaurant where they have goats grazing on the ROOF!!
